Pablo Picasso
Pablo Ruiz Picasso, born in Malaga, Spain, October 25, 1881,
and died April 8, 1973, was the most influential and successful
artist of the 20th century. Painting, sculpture, graphic
art, and ceramics were all profoundly and irrevocably affected
by his genius. As the son of a professor of art, Picasso's
talent for drawing was recognized at an early age. An advanced
student at the Barcelona Academy of Fine Arts from the age
of 14, he experimented in his youth with nearly all of the
avant-garde styles current at the turn of the century, an
early demonstration of his lifelong ability to assimilate
aesthetic ideas and to work in a variety of styles. For
Picasso, the meaning of art was to be derived from other
works of art, and not directly from nature. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's
work had a significant impact on his early paintings, as
did the work of Paul Cézanne. Their influence, among
others', can be detected in the paintings of Picasso's "blue
period".
Marie Antoinette
As the queen consort of King Louis XVI of France, Marie
Antoinette, born November 2, 1755, one of the most famous
scorpios, and died October 16, 1793, aroused hostile passions
that helped lead to the French revolution and the abolition
of the French monarchy in August 1792. The daughter of Maria
Theresa of Austria and Holy Roman Emperor Francis I, she
married Louis in 1770. By 1774, when her husband became
king, however, the beautiful, spirited Marie Antoinette
had withdrawn from the restraints of French court etiquette
and from her timid, aloof husband to a life of innocent
but frivolous pleasure. She enchanted her small circle of
friends but created the image of an untrustworthy foreigner
and prodigal spendthrift opposed to the reforms proposed
by the king's ministers. Her life became temporarily more
dignified after the birth of her first son, Louis Joseph,
in 1778, but her reputation worsened with the Affair of
the Diamond Necklace.
Voltaire
Voltaire, born Francois Marie Arouet, in Paris, November
21, 1694, and died May 30, 1778, was the most influential
figure of the French Enlightenment. Considered by his contemporaries
as the greatest poet and dramatist of the century, he is
now better known for his essays and tales. His precocious
wit, his upbringing among a group of libertines, or freethinkers,
and his predilection for aristocratic circles were to mark
his life, as his classical education by the Jesuits was
to form his taste.

business executive and computer engineer, born in 1955,
founded Microsoft Corporation, currently the world's leading

software that became best sellers - by copying other more
